Fall Flavors and Comfort Food Faves

As we transition from summer to fall, and the temperatures dip, we crave warm sweaters, football games, fall flavors (particularly pumpkin spice, maple, and apple) as well as comfort foods like chili and mac and cheese.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin-flavored foods have become so popular that the increased demand has resulted in an explosion of pumpkin products available in supermarkets with more and more popping up each year, and not just in the dessert or beverage category either. Yes, there are breads, coffees, muffins and cookies, but true pumpkin lovers are on the hunt for “all things pumpkin”, and they can certainly find plenty of items. Look for hummus, yogurt, bagels, butter, cream cheese, sauces, snacks, spreads, bisques, popcorn, ice cream, gelato, even dog treats!

Maple

Pumpkin also pairs well with maple, another delicious flavor that signals fall, and these two flavors can often be found together in recipes and products. Maple lovers can enjoy the slightly smoky, caramel-like sweetness in a variety of products ranging from cereals and snacks, goodies (like candy and ice cream) to butter and a non dairy maple oat beverage. Never settle for imitation maple syrup, whether using it as a table syrup or in cooking, for it can’t begin to compare to natural/pure maple syrup!

Did you know that pure maple syrup can be substituted in recipes calling for white sugar?

Here's how:

  • Substitute ¾ to one cup of maple syrup for every one cup white sugar
  • Decrease the liquid in the recipe by 2 to 4 tablespoons for each cup of sugar used
  • Add ¼  to ½ tsp. baking soda unless recipe already calls for buttermilk, sour milk or sour cream
  • Decrease oven temperature by 25 degrees as batters containing maple tend to caramelize around the edges more quickly

Cauliflower

Delicious, nutritious and versatile, cauliflower is another fall favorite and is most plentiful September through November. One of the most popular low-carb/keto veggies, it’s often used as a substitute for potatoes, pasta and rice. Once a no-no for those watching their carb intake, foods like mac and cheese (we included a recipe for this!), pizza, breadsticks, fritters, fried rice, tater tots and more can now be enjoyed with cauliflower lending its low carb star power to these dishes!

Apples

We featured this fall favorite recently, so if you missed it ... here it is again!
